Facebook event page

McGill has decided to shut down its Music Conservatory program. The program, which has been running since 1904, for almost 118 years, and has provided training to young students from all across the Greater Montreal area, is scheduled to no longer exist by the end of this summer.

In response to our members, parents and the community reaction, the Union is organizing a Stand With Music Rally on Tuesday, June 28. We will be meeting in front of the Schulich School of Music building at 555 Sherbrooke St. West from noon till 1 pm in a show of solidarity for the Conservatory Program.

Spread the word and share this email with your colleagues, students and parents. Please invite all of them. We need to show McGill how much the Conservatory means to all of us and to the community.

Let’s make sure we show up in strength and Stand With Music.

End-of-term get-together

April 29, 2019

MCLIU was proud to host Quebec Minister of Finance Girard, a McGill alumnus and son of a lady who herself was a course lecturer, at the afternoon reception at the Royal Victoria College residence. A significant number of McGill course lecturers and instructors attended and enjoyed food and drink accompanied by melodies performed by our music instructor, Dana Nigrim .

Worth noting is the speech of Minister Girard, who highlighted his government’s commitment to investing in higher education, especially in the university sector. He is aware of the importance and crucial role of an English university in the heart of a French city; hence its goodwill is essential to both the government and the community. He particularly applauded the role played by course lecturers and instructors in educating our youth and thus boosting the economy of the country.

President of MCLIU, Mr. Raad Jassim, welcomed Minister Girard and thanked him for sparing time from his busy schedule for meeting with our colleagues. Mr. Jassim also greeted Fneeq President, Ms. Caroline Quesnel; the Presidents of MUNASA, MUNACA, AMURE, AMUSE, and AGSEM; and distinguished members of McGill Course Lecturer and Instructors Union. Mr. Jassim, while applauding the efforts of Minister Girard in promoting Quebec’s economy and paying special attention to higher education in the provincial budget, also requested the Minister to strengthen unions and the workforce so that a flourishing labour market can contribute to the mutual building up of Quebec’s society.

Mr. Jassim highlighted that course lecturers contribute a wealth of practical experience in all the specializations required by our Quebec society and the rest of the world. They include bilingualism, diversity and an educational model that is used positively throughout the world. Since the world is a global village that is constantly changing, we must promote equality, academic freedom, and sustainability as we increase our human resources.

Fneeq President Caroline Quesnel also expressed her views on Quebec’s economy and the role of its workforce of course lecturers and instructors in building an equitable and just society. She appreciated MCLIU’s bringing Minister Girard to meet with McGill’s course lecturers and thanked the Minister for his gracious participation in the event.

At the end of the get-together, the members were invited to ask questions directly to Minister Girard on issues of mutual interest. The Minister welcomed the questions and responded to them in detail.
