McGill’s Inter-Union Council and SSMU Present Labour Week, March 18-23
Monday, March 18
Jean-Claude Parrot, National President (1977-1992) & Chief Negotiator (1974-1992) for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Mr. Parrot will talk about the current state of the labour movement in Canada and strategies for building solidarity and mobilization of workers and students.
Gaétan Ménard, Secretary-Treasurer for the Communications, Energy and Paper Workers Union of Canada (CEP). Mr. Ménard will speak about the future of the labour movement. In particular, he will address a new initiative that would bring together the CEP and the Canadian Auto Workers, two of the largest unions in Canada, a move that presents a new vision for the Canadian labour movement.

Organizers Mostafa Henaway & Aadi NDir will outline organizing strategies and tactics for IWC-CTI’s Temporary Agency Worker campaign.

Anti-Austerity Solidarity Rally & March for all McGill workers and students
Speakers will address the McGill administration’s approach to budget cutbacks, the protocol for free speech rights on campus, and mobilization of workers and students to resist administration austerity policies. Following the rally, there will be a march to the Senate hearing in Leacock.

Simon Tremblay-Pepin (L’Institut de recherche et d’informations socio-économiques) will discuss IRIS’ research and analysis of university budgets, addressing disturbing trends in the distribution of funds.

An Inquiry Into University Budgets: Part II & Wine and Cheese
Justin Merleau, Vice-Chair of AGSEM unit I, will present an analysis of McGill’s budget, demistifying the administration’s projected deficits, and explaining how money is being spent and why this is a problem for workers and students on campus. This talk will be followed by a wine and cheese.

Education At Work: Rethinking Labour In The Academy
A conference for labour and student activists, community organizers, and academics to explore how, by bringing together labour and education, the university can serve as a locus in which these categories are debated and negotiated. In particular, the conference addresses some of the following questions:
What is the future of public higher education in Quebec?
How has corporatization of university campuses affected students, workers, and marginalized communities seeking higher education?
How can students and workers build solidarity at their universities in the face of austerity measures by their administrations?
