Sent on behalf of Professor Christopher Manfredi, Provost and Vice-Principal Academic

Dear members of the McGill community:

It is my pleasure to announce the reappointment of Professor Jim Nicell as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Prof. Nicell’s second five-year term will begin on July 1, 2018, and end June 30, 2023. The Advisory Committee for the Possible Reappointment of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering conducted an extensive evaluation of Prof. Nicell’s performance, including a 360-degree leadership assessment and review of written comments from members of the McGill community. The McGill University Board of Governors accepted the committee’s recommendation during its meeting on April 26, 2018.

Under Prof. Nicell’s leadership, the Faculty of Engineering has maintained its commitment to a student-centered learning environment, to leading-edge research, and to promoting partnership and engagement within McGill and beyond.

Professor Nicell is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering & Applied Mechanics and a registered professional engineer. He earned his PhD in environmental engineering from the University of Windsor in 1991 and joined McGill’s Faculty of Engineering the following year. His research has focused on developing catalytic processes for treating trace contaminants in water, new methods for risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern, and green approaches to chemical design and production. His work has directly contributed to the implementation of policies, regulations and permitting processes in Canada and elsewhere to protect human health and the environment. Prior to becoming Dean, Prof. Nicell served as McGill’s Associate Vice-Principal (University Services) from 2007 to 2012 and as his faculty’s Associate Dean (Student Affairs) from 2001 to 2006. He is the current Vice-Chair of the National Council of Deans of Engineering & Applied Sciences.

Please join me in congratulating Prof. Nicell on his reappointment as Dean. Thank you to the members of the Advisory Committee, and to everyone in the community who shared their comments and advice during the reappointment process.

With best regards,

Professor Christopher Manfredi
Provost and Vice-Principal Academic
